Fortunately, pertussis has a vaccine to prevent catching the disease again for a long period of time. The name of the vaccine is known as DTap vaccination. DTap is an acronym for Diphtheria Tetanus and Pertussis vaccine. As the name shows, this vaccine covers three different kinds of diseases and sicknesses. This vaccine is only given to children, and after, adults and teenagers receive the Tdap vaccination. This vaccine is quite useful, as not only does it vaccinate for pertussis, but also for tetanus and diphtheria disease. 

The vaccination is made by chemically treating pertussis toxins to turn them nontoxic yet still capable of causing an immune response in the vaccinated patient. The bacteria that cause pertussis make several harmful toxins. The pertussis vaccine is is produced by taking two to five of these toxins and inactivating them with a chemical. The inactivated toxins are called 'toxoids.' The patient is given a small dosage of the non-toxic disease so the immune system can overpower the illness and learn how to fight the disease off in the future. This type of vaccine is known as a 'inactived' vaccine because it does not contain live bacteria and cannot replicate themselves, which is why numerous vaccines are required. These numerous amounts of vaccines required is known as the vaccine pattern. Five vaccinations are recommended. The DTap vaccines are usually given to children at the ages of 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 15 to 18 months, and 4 to 6 years old. The Tdap vaccine should then be given at the ages of around 11 or 12 years old and every 10 years on wards as a booster of the DTap. 

The effects this vaccine has on the immune system is mainly to build up more antibodies against pertussis bacteria so the body learns how to fight off the disease in the future. Tdap or 'booster' vaccines are just those which refill the body with these antibodies again so it is once again ready to protect the body from this disease.
